Re: Narcotic Medication Expiration

To: All EMS Personnel

From: Dr. Greg Kann, Stanislaus County EMS Agency Medical Director

Narcotic medication backorders from manufacturers have been reported as a potential concern, as some providers have been reporting difficulty in purchasing Midazolam, Fentanyl, and Morphine.

Beginning today, I am authorizing the following:

1. Extension of expiration dates for Morphine, Fentanyl, and Midazolam with a manufactured set expiration date on, or after the month of 10/01/2022, but no later than 12/31/2022. The medications with a set manufactured expiration date within the 10/01/2022 to 12/31/2022 timeframe can be extended through no later than December 31st, 2022.

Example:

Morphine, Fentanyl, or Midazolam that has an expiration date of 10/01/2022 – 10/31/2022. Extended expiration date would be 12/31/2022.

Morphine, Fentanyl, or Midazolam that has an expiration date of 11/01/2022 – 11/31/2022. Extended expiration date would be 12/31/2022.

Please contact the EMS Agency office if you have any questions related to this temporary approval.
